For children living on the street, in extreme poverty or in abusive or exploitative situations, basic health issues can become life threatening. Having a greater understanding about health and related issues is one way of working towards the fulfillment of children’s right to survival.
The Junior Health Workers Program is a program aimed at assisting in the campaign to improve public health from the grassroots level. The children who participate in this program receive training about personal health, reproductive health, environmental health, first aid, hygiene, sanitation and common diseases. The children are then given skills to be able to teach other children about health as well as to operate as junior health assistants. In other words, they are able to provide basic assistance to people in accessing health services or obtaining referrals, administering first aid and reducing the incidence of preventable diseases.
