On Saturday 26th September, a tropical storm hit Manila,
causing the worst floods the city has seen in 40 years.
The floods have left
many families homeless, without possessions and caused the loss of up to 80
lives so far.
Apart from the immediate impact of the floods there is the impact of
disease that will eventuate from contaminated stagnate water in the city,
and the cost involved with rebuilding infrastructure.
Many of the Bahay Tuluyan children and their families have been impacted by this disaster. Their little
possessions ruined, and their homes destroyed.
Bahay Tuluyan has provided immediate relief to the victims of this disaster, and will now engage in recovery activities over the coming months to help victims to re-build their lives.
Activities include
- assisting families to re-establish their homes and their means of livelihood
- assisting community services such as schools and daycare to re-open
- undertaking activities for children in evacuation centres, including education and social therapy
There is a great demand for all this work, as in our local government area alone over 1,700 families were affected by the typhoon.
Bahay Tuluyan relies on your support to fund its work. For example, just AUD$10 could provide 2 relief packs, a school uniform for a child or a gas stove for a family.
