The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989. This document is the most widely ratified treaty in the world, the United States of America being the only country which has not yet ratified the treaty.

The UNCRC reflects a vision of the child as human beings and the subject of their own rights. The UNCRC offers a vision of the child as an individual and as a member of a family and community, with rights and responsibilities appropriate to his or her age and stage of development. The UNCRC is a very important document because it recognizes the inherent rights of children and assures to them their human dignity.

The Philippines was the 31st country to ratify the UNCRC in 1990. At the date that the UNCRC was ratified by the Philippines it became part of local law by virtue of Senate Resolution 109.

The UNCRC contains 41 substantive articles relating to children’s rights. These articles can be divided into six categories:

  • Fundamental Principles
  • Civil & Political Rights
  • Health, Nutrition & Welfare
  • Family & Alternative Care
  • Education, Culture & Leisure Activities
  • Special Protection Measures
